Microgeneration Support
What is microgeneration?
Microgeneration is the small-scale production of green electricity and heat from renewable sources. Many households use solar, wind and hydro technologies to generate clean energy as an alternative or supplement to grid-connected power.
A growing number of PrepayPower customers have solar PV panels that generate clean energy from daylight mounted to their rooftops. And since February 15th, when the Clean Export Guarantee went into effect, many of them have been exporting excess renewable electricity to the national grid.
What is Clean Export Guarantee?

The governmental Clean Export Guarantee lets homeowners with registered microgeneration devices export their surplus renewable electricity to the national grid and receive payment based on the quantity of units (kWh) exported.
Further information can be found here.
Am I eligible for the Clean Export Guarantee?

You must be a PrepayPower electricity customer and own a registered microgeneration device to be eligible for the Clean Export Guarantee. You’re also required to complete an NC6 form with ESB Networks to enable them to record your exports to the grid.
What’s the difference between a Metered Export and Deemed Export?

There are two energy exports for which you can receive payment via the Clean Export Guarantee: metered and deemed. The nature of your export depends on what type of meter you have in your home.
For instance, if you own a smart meter, you will be reimbursed for metered exports. This means you receive precise payment for every unit (kWh) you export to the grid.
With other meters, you will get paid for every deemed (estimated) unit you export. The quantity of deemed exports is calculated by the ESB using a formula determined by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).
*Your metered and/or deemed export quantities will be reflected in all payment statements PrepayPower send you.
When and how will I get paid?
You will receive your first export payment via top-up to your PrepayPower account in Autumn 2022. This will be backdated to February 15th (when the scheme took effect) or the date thereafter your application to the scheme was registered.
Your first payment will compensate you for any energy exported from either date to March 31st. And your next payment, will reimburse you for exports between April and September (inclusive).
Following your second payment, you will receive two annual payments – in May and November - for your exports. We will also send you an accompanying emailed statement with every payment.
Finally, to make sure you obtain top-up payments from PrepayPower, please notify us of any changes to the account holder’s name, phone number and email address.
What rate will I get paid?
PrepayPower currently offers a rate of 14c* (15.89 inc. VAT) per unit (kWh) exported to the grid. You can calculate your total payment by multiplying the current rate by your deemed or metered export quantity (available in your payment statements).
*This rate is subject to change based on market prices.
